Donkey Holla is a new, unique shipping container house located in Coral Bay on St John, Virgin Islands. Our labor of love is built entirely of steel and tropical hardwood and survived two category 5 hurricanes in September! We are in a rare, flat area of the island that is amazingly easy to get to. No scary driveway! Walk to Skinny Legs! We are only a short drive from the famous north shore beaches, the east end snorkel spots or from Salt Pond and Lameshur bays to the south.

The space consists of two 20-foot shipping containers, 16 feet apart, with a screened in kitchen/ atrium in the center. Hardwood floors run through the entire space. One pod is the bedroom with a queen size bed, bath and gorgeous, private outdoor shower. The other pod is set up with a small sectional couch and a 50" smart tv for netflix and chill situations. Both pods can be closed off from the middle area. We love to cook, so the centerpiece of the galley-style kitchen is an eight-foot butcher block island that we modified with a breakfast bar and a stainless drop-in cook top. Definitely the heart of the space.

This house is so unique.

This house is so unique. Very thoughtfully designed and decorated - I would describe it as a blend of minimalist-industrial-cozy, with a lot of natural touches. We went in early April and it was the perfect time of year to stay there - there is no climate control inside other than fans and the way the space channels the nice breeze, yet we were perfectly cool at all times of day and there were hardly any bugs/mosquitos. The backyard is particularly comfortable and cute, with constant streams of hummingbirds, bananaquits, lizards and even a tree frog. Great star viewing too. Also good comfy space for Netflix and chill on the other side of the screen inside. Comfortable bed and awesome indoor-outdoor shower also pluses. Inviting, well-equipped kitchen for cooking (tho grocery stores on the island do not have near the breadth and variety of mainland selection, and what they do have is quite expensive, so be aware of that; still, we cooked a lot). Centrally located within Coral Bay, we could easily walk to Skinny Legs and Rhumb Lines, and I even walked to Love’s Market (grocery store) a couple of times. You’ll have to drive everywhere on the island for the most part, but this house is really a relatively short distance from all of the beaches and hikes that we enjoyed the most. Not “secluded” necessarily, but totally quiet and unbothered by other people. Alec and Holly were nearby, accessible, and very responsive. Overall a special place!

Last Minute Trip to St John

My wife and I decided to take a last minute trip to our favorite place in the world, St. John USVI, specifically Coral Bay out on the quiet side of the island. Alec and Holly were amazing hosts, beginning with our first contact. They provided fantastic communication leading up to and throughout our stay, which made the process so easy and were extremely flexible with regards to specific dates we needed in order for our trip to take place. Holly was always available via phone for any questions we had or suggestions on places to explore. They've lived on island for many years, so they have a wealth of knowledge of everything St. John: local restaurants, beaches, hiking trails, you name it! What Alec and Holly have done with this modern container home is completely genius and it's evident that they spent a lot of time planning out even the smallest detail. So simple, yet so functional. If you enjoy cooking, then you will love Donkey Holla. My one regret is not spending more time utilizing the kitchen. Did I mention the private outdoor shower with relaxing Caribbean breezes? The pictures really don't do this space the needed justice, so you must experience it for yourself! Thank you again, Alec and Holly, for an unforgettable 8 days! Look forward to seeing both of you again soon! Alex and Brandi

This is the coolest place we've ever rented.

This is the coolest place we've ever rented. Two renovated shipping containers separated by a wide screened in area with beautiful hardwood floors and very well equipped kitchen. Not secluded but peaceful and relaxing. Loved it.

Expect a very modern and Green place

Expect a very modern and Green place to live that is unique compared to most of the other places in St. John. Definitely one of the cooler places I've stayed.
